Congratulations to our new students! Rikkyo University has been looking forward to ushering in spring together with you, and I would again like to you offer you all heartfelt felicitations on your university entrance.

Last year marked the 150th anniversary of the 1874 establishment of Rikkyo as St. Paul’s School in Tsukiji, Tokyo by Bishop Channing Moore Williams, a missionary from the Episcopal Church in the United States. At that time, Japan had a utilitarian tendency, and knowledge and technology were often seen as tools for material prosperity and self-advancement. Bishop Williams, however, rejected that trend, positioning his establishment as “a place for true human education, based on Christianity.” Since then, Rikkyo has remained committed to providing an authentic liberal arts education, the essence of which entails acquiring the knowledge truly necessary to live as a human being; the ability to feel and empathize with the pain of others; a worldview and historical awareness informed by world history and human history; and the international sensibility necessary to live in a multicultural world.

What we at Rikkyo will communicate to you all over the next four years is that genuine liberal arts education. The liberal arts are about more than just culture. Recently, there has been a lot of talk about “fast learning,” and demand is undoubtedly strong for forms of education like 10-minute bite-size learning that deliver high cost performance. These days, when we want to know something, we go straight to the internet. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, and in fact I encourage you to learn how to make effective use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

At the same time, I hardly need to remind you that the Internet is full of false information. ChatGPT has been known to lie with great confidence. As Rikkyo students, rather than taking shortcuts in the pursuit of knowledge and believing everything you read, I expect you to turn to original, primary materials to check your facts. That will mean learning the necessary languages and understanding different cultures. If it’s something that is not in Japan, you will have to go overseas and see for yourself.

The libraries at both our Ikebukuro and Niiza campuses are among the best university libraries in Japan, and they’re open from early in the morning until late at night. I urge you to make full use of these facilities. And it’s not just about picking up books-I recommend that you take the opportunity to surround yourself with books as the accumulation of human knowledge and let your mind run free. It’s a luxury that you only get to enjoy as a student.

At Rikkyo, please acquire a real liberal arts education, along with the capacity to think logically, identify issues, and envision the future. You will be laying the foundations for lifelong learning, or, in other words, forming the marrow of yourself as a person that you will carry for your entire life, as well as equipping yourself with a wide-ranging mental map of society and a compass for your journey. Learn to doubt common sense and accepted opinions and question and relativize authority. Develop a critical sense that is constantly asking “why.” Don’t be afraid to criticize or be criticized but rather continue to pursue truth. Know yourself, be aware of others, learn about people, and decipher the world.

Individuals with such capacities and sensibilities are absolutely essential to society in these unpredictable times. Mounting societal complexity and the social transformations wrought by globalization in fact increase the number of yardsticks for measuring value. We’re entering an era in which one fixed yardstick simply isn’t sufficient to live by. At Rikkyo, grow the number of your internal yardsticks so that you can understand different values and ways of thinking.

Now, please take a look at your program. Do you see Rikkyo University’s official symbol? The book in the middle is the scripture There’s something written inside it, isn’t there? In fact, it’s the slogan “Pro Deo et Patria,” which embodies Rikkyo’s founding principles. “Pro Deo et Patria” is Latin. “Pro” means “for,” “Deo” is “God,” “et” is “and,” and “Patria” is “country” or “motherland.” The literal translation is therefore “For God and country.” But “Deo” also carries the meaning of “universal truth,” while “Patria” also refers to neighbors, society, and the world. So the deeper meaning of “Pro Deo et Patria” is to pursue universal truth and serve our world, society, and neighbors. As our founding slogan, “Pro Deo et Patria” constantly reminds us that Rikkyo’s very mission is to cultivate individuals who will seek universal truth and serve society and the world. You will also find “Pro Deo et Patria” engraved on your student ID card.

“Pro Deo,” or the search for universal truth, is the pursuit of the authentic liberal arts education that I spoke of earlier. “Pro Patria,” becoming someone who provides concrete service to their neighbors, society, and the world, means becoming someone who prizes the human dignity of every individual and can empathize deeply with the pain of others.

To help you understand the essence of this model, I’d like to introduce an article by journalist and author Akihiro Otani. He wrote this particular piece for a column called “Mado” (meaning window) back when he was a Yomiuri Shimbun reporter.

Hiroshima senior high school student A suffered an illness after birth that affected her legs, so that she stumped along heavily even on flat ground. Every July, an inter-class swimming relay competition was held at her school on the day that the school pool reopened. Each class would field a four-person team of two boys and two girls, each of whom would swim 25 meters. The high school emphasized student autonomy, and again that year, each class was left to decide who would represent them at this student-run event.

Student A’s class had chosen two boys and one girl, but they needed one more girl. A class bully, who was in a hurry to get home, came up with a cruel suggestion. “Student A hasn’t participated in Sports Day or the swimming competition once in the last three years. She’s done none of the class things. This is the last opportunity, so she should swim for us.”

Student A was sure that someone would stand up for her, but the girls were worried that if they said anything, they would have to swim, while the boys thought that if they spoke up, they would be targeted by the group of bullies. So, they all kept quiet, and Student A-who couldn’t even swim-was chosen for the team.

When she got home, Student A went crying to her mother. But her usually sympathetic mother turned on her in a rage.

“You say that you’re going to get a job next year instead of going to university. When one of your superiors tells you to do a job that you can’t do, do you expect me to come along and ask them to let you off? Just once in three years, how about talking back and saying, sure, I’ll swim for you-but it’ll mean that the class will be last in the whole school this year.”

Through her tears, Student A decided that she would walk the 25 meters, but when she went to tell her mother, she was shocked to find her kneeling wild-haired and desperate in the room where the household altar was kept. “Please,” she was praying, “make my child strong.”

On the day of the swimming competition, Student A’s slow walk down the pool drew hoots and cries from the watching students. But then, around the halfway mark, something happened.

A man jumped into the pool in his suit and began to walk along next to Student A. It was the school principal.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes. I’ll walk with you, so you see it through. Hold your head high, and walk on your own two feet,” he urged.

The hoots and cries died in an instant, and everyone instead began to cheer Student A on. When she finally completed the 25-meter distance, her friends, the teachers, and even the students that had bullied her all cried.

What we learn from this story is the importance of encouraging others to walk on their own two feet by walking alongside them on that journey. Becoming “Pro Patria”-someone who provides concrete service to their neighbors, society, and the world and respects the dignity of each individual-begins with telling someone who is struggling with pain or sorrow or having a rough time, or who has lost their sense of where they belong, that you are there for them.

All Rikkyo’s teachers and staff will value each of you as a unique human being and will walk constantly alongside you. And I hope that each of you too will become someone who lives with and for others with the same kind of love, extending the fullest respect for their dignity.

In closing, I pray that you will be truly blessed in your lives and learning over your coming years at Rikkyo University. Thank you.

新入生のみなさん、ご入学おめでとうございます。立教大学は、みなさんと共に迎える春を心待ちにしておりました。あらためて、みなさんのご入学を心より祝福したいと思います。

立教大学は、1874年にアメリカの聖公会からの宣教師であったチャニング・ムーア・ウィリアムズ主教が東京・築地に「立教学校」（St. Paul’s School）を創設してから、昨年で150年を迎えました。ウィリアムズ主教は、当時の「実利主義」や、知識、技術を物質的な繁栄と立身出世の道具とする日本の風潮とは明確な一線を画して、立教を「キリスト教に基づく真の人間教育を行う場」と位置づけました。それ以来、立教大学は、徹底して本物のリベラルアーツを大切にしてまいりました。その本質とは、人間が生きていく上で本当に必要な「智」、他者の痛みに共感し、共苦できる「感性」、世界史的、人類史的な「世界観」と「歴史認識」、多文化世界に生きることのできる「国際性」を身につけることにあります。

立教大学がこれからの４年間、全学をあげてみなさんに伝えていくのは、この本物のリベラルアーツです。リベラルアーツは単なる「教養」ではありません。最近は「ファスト教養」という言葉も聞かれるようになりました。「10分で分かる何々」といった、コスパ良く教養を得ようとするニーズは確かに高いようです。みなさんも何かを知りたいと思った時に、すぐにインターネットで検索されることがあると思います。決してそのことが悪いわけではありませんし、いわゆるChatGPTなどに代表される生成系AIなどをしっかりと使いこなす術もぜひ身につけていただきたいと思います。

しかしながら、言うまでもありませんが、インターネット上にはフェイク情報が溢れています。ChatGPTは自信満々に嘘をつくことがあります。私が、立教大学の学生となられたみなさんに求めたいことは、手っ取り早く知識を得ようとしたり、鵜呑みにしたりすることなく、自らオリジナルの資料、すなわち第一次資料や原書、原文にあたり、読み、確かめて欲しいということです。そのためには、必要な言語を修得し、異なる文化を理解する必要があります。日本にないものであれば、実際に海外にまで出かけていき、自分の目で確かめなければなりません。

立教大学には池袋キャンパスにも、新座キャンパスにも日本の大学の中でも有数の図書館があります。早朝から夜遅くまで開館しています。みなさんには、ぜひ立教大学の図書館をフルに活用していただきたいと願います。実際に本を手に取ることはもちろんですが、人類の知の集積である本に囲まれながら、さまざまなことを思い巡らすということもお勧めします。それはまさしく学生時代にしかできない贅沢な時間です。

みなさんはこの立教大学で本物のリベラルアーツを修得し、論理的思考力、課題発見力、未来社会の構想力を身につけてください。それは、みなさんが生涯にわたって学び続けるための土台作りでもあり、言い換えれば、みなさんが一生の間、持ち続ける人間としての芯を形作る学びであり、社会の大きな見取り図、羅針盤を自分の中に持つことです。いわゆる「常識」「定説」を疑い、「権威」を問い、相対化させること。「なぜ」と問いかける批判的精神を形成することでもあります。批判すること、批判されることを恐れず、真理とは何かにこだわり続けること。自己の存在を知り、他者の存在に気づき、人間を学び、世界を読み解くことです。

予測不可能と言われる今の時代、社会が最も求めるのは、まさしくこのような力と感性を持っている者たちであることは間違いありません。社会の複雑化とグローバル化による社会変化とは、実は価値を測る「物差し」が増えるということでもあります。固定化された一つの「物差し」では、もはや生きていくことはできない時代に、みなさんは突入しています。異なる価値観や考え方を理解するために、立教大学で、ぜひ、自分の中の「物差し」を増やしていってください。

さて、みなさんが今お持ちの式次第をご覧ください。そこには立教大学のシンボルマーク、校章が描かれています。真ん中に置かれている本は、聖書です。そして聖書の上に何か文字が書かれていますね。それはこういう言葉です。“Pro Deo et Patria”。これこそが立教大学の「建学の精神」を表す言葉です。“Pro Deo et Patria”とはラテン語で、Proは「～のため」、Deoは神、etは英語の“and”、Patriaは祖国や国という意味ですので、“Pro Deo et Patria”を直訳すると、「神と国のために」ということになります。しかしながらDeoには「普遍的な真理」、Patriaには、「隣人や社会、世界」という内容が含まれています。したがって、“Pro Deo et Patria”が示す本来的な内容とは、普遍的なる真理を探究し、この世界、社会、隣人のために働くこと、となるわけです。普遍的真理を探究し、この世界、社会のために働く者を育てることが、立教大学のまさに「ミッション」（使命）であることを、この建学の標語、“Pro Deo et Patria”は常に私たちに思い起こさせてくれるのです。この“Pro Deo et Patria“という言葉は、みなさんに与えられる「立教大学の学生証」にも刻まれています。

“Pro Deo”、普遍的なる真理を探究することとは、さきほど述べました「本物のリベラルアーツ」を究めることです。そして、“Pro Patria”、隣人、社会、世界に具体的に奉仕する者となるというのは、一人ひとりの「人間の尊厳」を大切にし、他者の痛みに敏感に共感できる者となることです。

この規範の本質について、みなさんにより知っていただくために、ある記事をご紹介したいと思います。ジャーナリストで、作家でもある大谷昭宏さんが、読売新聞の記者をされていた頃に「窓」というコラム欄に書かれたものです。このような記事でした。

広島の女子高生のA子さんは生まれた後の病いが原因で足が悪くて、平らなところでもドタンバタンと大きな音をたてて歩きます。この高校では毎年７月になると、プールの解禁日にあわせて、クラス対抗リレー大会が開かれます。ひとクラスから男女二人ずつ四人の選手を出して、一人が25メートル泳いで競争します。この高校は生徒の自主性を非常に尊重し、生徒たちだけで自由にやるという水泳大会で、その年も、各クラスで選手を決めることになりました。

Ａ子さんのクラスでは男子二人、女子一人は決まったのですが、残る女子一人が決まらなかった。そこで、早く帰りたくてしょうがないそのクラスのいじめっ子が、「Ａ子はこの３年間体育祭にも出ていないし、水泳大会にも出ていない。何もクラスのことをしていないじゃないか。三年の最後なんだから、Ａ子に泳いでもらったらいいじゃないか」と意地の悪いことをいいました。

Ａ子さんは誰かが味方してくれるだろうと思いましたが、女の子が言えば自分が泳がなければならないし、男の子が言えばいじめっ子のグループからいじめられることになり、誰も味方してくれませんでした。結局そのまま泳げないＡ子さんが選手に決まりました。

家に帰りＡ子さんは、お母さんに泣いて相談しました。ところが、いつもはやさしいお母さんですが、この日ばかりは違いました。

「お前は、来年大学に行かずに就職するって言ってるけど、課長さんとか係長さんからお前ができない仕事を言われたら、今度はお母さんが『うちの子にこんな仕事をさせないでください』と言いに行くの？たまには、そこまで言われたら『いいわ、私、泳いでやる。言っとくけど、うちのクラスは今年は全校でビリよ』と、三年間で一回くらい言い返してきたらどうなの」とものすごく怒ります。

Ａ子さんは泣きながら、25メートルを歩く決心をし、そのことをお母さんに告げようとしてびっくりしました。仏間でお母さんが髪を振り乱し、「Ａ子を強い子にしてください」と必死に仏壇に向って祈っていたのです。

水泳大会の日、水中を歩くＡ子さんを見て、まわりから、わあわあと奇声や笑い声が聞こえてきます。彼女がやっとプールの中ほどまで進んだその時でした。

一人の男の人が背広を着たままプールに飛び込みＡ子さんの横を一緒に歩き始めた。それは、この高校の校長先生だったのです。

「何分かかってもいい。先生が一緒に歩いてあげるから、ゴールまで歩きなさい。はずかしいことじゃない。自分の足で歩きなさい」と励まされた。

一瞬にして、奇声や笑い声は消え、みんなが声を出して彼女を応援しはじめた。長い時間をかけて彼女が25メートルを歩き終わったとき、友達も先生もそして、いじめていた子たちもみんな泣いていました。

私たちが、この物語から学ぶことは、「私が一緒に歩くから、自分の足で歩きなさい」ということの大切さです。“Pro Patria”、隣人、社会、世界に具体的に奉仕する者となること、一人ひとりの「人間の尊厳」を大切にすることの原点とは、生き辛さや、痛み、悲しみをかかえている人、居場所を見失った人に、私はあなたと共にいると告げることに他なりません。

立教大学の全教員、全職員は、みなさんの一人ひとりを、かけがえのない存在として、大切にし、必ず一緒に歩きます。そして、みなさんもまた、このような愛をもって、他者のために、他者と共に生き、その尊厳を限りなく尊ぶ者となっていただきたいと思います。

これからのみなさんの立教大学での学びと生活が豊かに恵まれたものとなりますよう、お祈りしつつ、訓示とさせていただきます。

2021年４月に、第22代立教大学総長に就任してから、早いもので４年が過ぎようとしております。この間、さまざまな課題に常に直面してまいりましたが、みなさんのお力添えのおかげでここまで来ることができました。なにより、立教につらなるすべての方々と共に創立150周年を迎え、そして互いに祝福できましたことは、私の人生において忘れることのできない大切な記憶となりました。本日、ただいまの宣誓式をもって、あらためて、立教大学第23代総長に任じられ、身が引き締まる思いです。

４年前に私が総長の仕事を始める際にお示しした「大学運営の基本方針2021-2024」では、２つの重点政策及び、８つの政策の柱を立て、大学運営に取り組んでまいりました。その結果、みなさんと力を合わせたからこそ、実現に至ることができた取り組みや事業、さらには仕組みづくりの成果が数多くありました。舵取りをする中で、まさしく嵐のような難局にも直面しましたが、なんとかその都度、乗り越えてこられたのも、誠実かつ有能な教員、職員のみなさんのお支えがあったからにほかなりません。それは、＜ALL立教＞の価値や尊さをまさに体感するプロセスでもありました。

しかし、その一方で、高等教育のみならず、世界・社会を取り巻く状況はさらに不透明さと厳しさを増しており、この４年間、全力で取り組んだことへの達成感を感じる傍らで、まだ具現化に至っていないこと、未完に終わっていることも多数あり、責任をもって仕上げていかなければならいと痛感しています。内外の環境がさらに大きく変化する中で、創立150年を超えた立教大学の未来を見据えて、普遍的真理を探究し続け、続く時代の、世界、社会に貢献できる人々を生み育てるという使命のために邁進しなければなりません。「建学の精神」を再確認しつつ、時間と空間を超えて、人と人をつなぎ、世界につながる大学であることを大切にしながら、教える者と学ぶ者、そして、それを助ける者が、真に「誇れる大学」へと不断に変革してまいります。

いわゆる大学カテゴリーの類いに縛られることなく、日本で、さらには世界で輝くオンリーワンの大学となることを目標とします。立教大学がこの150年間大切にしてきた立教大学が誇るリベラルアーツ教育をさらに高度化しながら、みなさんと力を合わせて、新たな展開、改革に大胆に取り組み、ALL立教の智恵と活力を結集することにより、＜Global Liberal Arts & Sciences＞を究める大学へと進化させてまいります。

最後に、あらためて、米国の神学者、ラインホルド・ニーバーの祈りに聴きながら、私の立教大学第23代総長就任の挨拶とさせていただきます。


神よ、変えるべきものを変える勇気と
変えてはならないものを受け入れる冷静さと
そしてその両者を見分ける知恵を、私たちに与えてください
